Athlete’s foot or tinea pedis is a common fungal condition that usually develops in the moist areas between the toes or on the soles and sides of the feet. Symptoms include burning, itching and the appearance of peeling or cracked skin. Athletes foot is fairly contagious, as it thrives in warm and moist environments (locker rooms and bathrooms). Treatment usually entails the purchase of an over the counter medication and application daily for several weeks. Keeping your feet clean and dry is also an integral part of the treatment protocol. In some cases, when athletes foot does not respond to over the counter medications, prescription medication may be necessary.
